Best product
For waterproofing any project that will hold animals or fish the best product I have found is A1 Pond Paint from Antel. It is completely safe once dried and that is what makes it worth the money. It is water based but sets like a resin. It's a two part paint so mix small batches at a time because it actually goes a long way. I have built two large grow beds for a large aquaponic system (Pictured below) and a few other bits and I still have about half a tin left.

FAQs about our Pond Paint
Is Pond Paint safe for fish?
Yes, A1 Pond Paint is completely fish safe once fully cured. After around 7 days, the coating becomes chemically inert, meaning it will not release any harmful substances into the water. This makes it suitable for ponds with fish and other aquatic life.
What surfaces can pond paint be used on?
A1 Pond Paint can be applied to a wide range of surfaces including concrete, masonry, fibreglass, and marine plywood. It is designed to create a strong waterproof coating on rigid pond structures and water features.
Can I use pond paint on a pond liner?
No, pond paint is not suitable for flexible pond liners. It is designed for solid surfaces such as concrete or fibreglass and will not adhere properly to liner materials.
How many coats of pond paint do I need?
Two coats are recommended for best results. This ensures full coverage and creates a durable, waterproof barrier that protects your pond from leaks and damage.
How long does pond paint take to dry?
Pond paint is typically touch dry in around 6 hours and hard dry in approximately 12 hours at 20°C. Drying times may vary depending on temperature and ventilation.
How long should I wait before refilling my pond?
You should wait at least 7 days before refilling your pond. This allows the paint to fully cure and ensures it is completely safe for fish and aquatic life.
How much pond paint do I need?
As a guide, 1 litre of pond paint covers approximately 6–7 square metres on a smooth surface. Coverage will vary depending on surface condition and porosity, so it’s recommended to allow extra for rough or absorbent surfaces.
What is the best pond paint for concrete ponds?
Epoxy-based pond paints, like A1 Pond Paint, are considered one of the best options for concrete ponds. They provide a strong, waterproof seal and long-lasting protection against leaks and surface damage.
Do I need to prime a pond before painting?
In most cases, priming is not required if the surface is clean, dry, and properly prepared. However, very porous surfaces may benefit from a first thin coat to improve adhesion.
How long does pond paint last?
When applied correctly, pond paint can last for many years. Its durability depends on surface preparation, application, and environmental conditions, but epoxy coatings are known for long-term performance.
What’s the difference between pond paint and pond sealant?
Pond paint creates a durable, waterproof coating on the surface, while sealants are typically used for joints, cracks, or smaller repairs. For full pond waterproofing, paint is usually the better option.
